A defense official has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese cars.
He said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The wider defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of official activities, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
